About Darwin Lake

Location: Darley Moor, Matlock, Derbyshire
Website: darwinlake.co.uk

Darwin Lake is a private wedding village tucked just outside Matlock in the Peak District. It’s surrounded by ten acres of woodland, and at the centre is a still, mirror-like lake that gives the venue its calm, cinematic feel.

If you’re planning your wedding at Darwin Lake, I already know you love peace, nature, and a little bit of magic. It’s a hidden gem in the Derbyshire countryside, surrounded by woodland, stone cottages, and that gorgeous still lake that reflects every bit of light and emotion.

It’s one of those places that just feels calm. The air’s fresh, the views are cinematic, and whether you’re planning a full weekend celebration or a small elopement, the atmosphere instantly slows everything down in the best way.

For me, as a makeup artist, it’s the perfect backdrop for natural-meets-alternative looks — soft light, skin that glows without shimmer overload, and makeup that holds through laughter, weather, and happy tears.

Soon-to-be-wed look ideas

1) The Woodland Goddess
Think glowy skin, bronze tones, mossy-gold lids, and dewy lips. It’s natural, grounded, and looks incredible in the woodland light.

2) The Ethereal Rebel
A glowy base with structured liner or metallic shimmer — soft, romantic, but with edge. Perfect if you want something modern that still feels organic.

3) The Dark Fairytale Soon-to-be-wed
Matte skin, deep-toned lips, smoky eyes and a touch of highlight on the collarbones. This look absolutely owns the golden-hour photos by the lake.

Getting ready at Darwin Lake

The on-site cottages make wedding mornings so much easier — everyone can stay in the same place, and the energy feels relaxed and together. Some of the cottages have gorgeous natural light and plenty of space for your wedding party, which is always a win for both makeup and photography.

A typical Darwin Lake morning usually looks like this:

  • 07:30 HMUA arrival & setup near a window (the natural light here is perfect)

  • 07:45–09:30 Bridesmaid 1 + MOB makeup

  • 09:30–11:00 Bridesmaid 2 + Bridesmaid 3 makeup

  • 11:00–12:00 Soon-to-be-wed makeup (always last — so your skin looks flawless and fresh)

  • 12:00–12:30 Touch-ups, detail photos, last looks

  • 12:30 Ceremony or first look
